Navigating Traffic & Timing

Summer Saturdays on Highway 59 (the main beach road) can be brutal. Locals arrive before 10am or after 4pm to beat the worst of it. If you're heading home on a Saturday, leave before 8am or after 7pm.

The Best Beach Spots

• Gulf State Park beach: Hands down the best maintained, least crowded public beach section. The parking is free with park admission and the beach is stunning.
• West Beach Boulevard: Often overlooked by tourists who head straight for the main strip, West Beach has beautiful access points and fewer crowds
• Fort Morgan Peninsula: Drive 22 miles west of Gulf Shores for some of the most pristine, uncrowded beach on the Alabama coast

Hidden Gems

• Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge: Locals escape here for gorgeous hiking and near-empty beaches
• Lake Shelby inside Gulf State Park: A beautiful freshwater lake perfect for kayaking, just minutes from the Gulf
• The back bays: Rent a kayak and explore the tidal creeks behind the island — herons, oyster beds, and total peace

Eating & Shopping Like a Local

• Foley (20 minutes north) has all the big-box stores, grocery shopping, and outlet malls — stock up here rather than paying beach prices
• Hazel's Nook for breakfast: arrive before 8am to avoid the line
• The Hangout for lunch, not dinner — beat the evening crowds

Best Times to Visit

Late April-May is magical: water is warm enough to swim, wildflowers are blooming in the dunes, and you'll find accommodation deals up to 40% lower than peak July rates.
