The Real Destin
Destin was a small fishing village before it became a resort town — and that fishing heritage is still very much alive. The harbor is working and real, the fish are genuinely plentiful, and the people who grew up here take quiet pride in what the place used to be (and still is, if you know where to look).
Beat the Crowds: Beach Strategy
- Henderson Beach State Park: This is the local secret hiding in plain sight. A genuine state park with pristine, less-developed beach right in the middle of Destin. The parking lot fills by 9am on summer weekends — go early or go early evening.
- Miramar Beach: Slightly east of the main Destin strip, Miramar Beach has beautiful access points with less congestion
- James Lee Park: A local favorite with excellent parking, pavilions, and a beautiful stretch of beach
- Crystal Beach: Quieter residential area east of downtown with multiple public access points
Crab Island Tips
Crab Island is a must-do, but go on a weekday or early morning on weekends. Rent a pontoon boat for the full experience, or take a water taxi from the harbor boardwalk. Bring your own food and drinks — vendors there charge resort prices.

- Scenic 98 (Old 98) through Destin: The old highway parallels the main road and passes through the quieter, original neighborhoods — a beautiful drive
- Donut Hole breakfast: Go before 8am or after 1pm — the line during prime hours is epic but worth it
- East Pass at sunset: Walk to the Destin Bridge over East Pass at sunset for some of the most spectacular light you'll ever see
- Tuesday night fishing report: Check local Facebook groups for real-time fishing reports — the offshore bite can be incredible
Navigating Traffic
Destin traffic on US-98 in summer is notoriously brutal. Locals use Old 98 as an alternative and never drive the main strip between 11am-2pm or 5pm-7pm on summer weekends.
