Everything a local knows about Dauphin Island โ the hidden gems, the best times to visit, and insider tips for your Gulf Coast getaway.
Dauphin Island is one of those rare places that hasn't been overrun by mass tourism. Locals love it that way. Here's what you need to know to experience the island like an insider.
Dauphin Island sits at the end of a long causeway south of Mobile. The drive itself is beautiful โ watch for dolphins in the bay on the way in. There's also a seasonal car ferry from Fort Morgan that cuts across the mouth of Mobile Bay, a scenic shortcut worth taking at least once.
The sweet spot is late April through May and September through October. The weather is gorgeous, crowds are minimal, and accommodations are significantly cheaper than peak summer. The water is still warm enough for swimming well into October.
Bring cash โ several of the best spots on the island are cash-only. Pack bug spray for evenings in the warmer months. And give yourself at least 3 nights; Dauphin Island is the kind of place that takes a day to decompress into.
Locals know that the light on Dauphin Island is some of the best on the Gulf Coast. Our photographers love working here โ book a golden hour session and see for yourself!
