Beach Tips for Gulf Shores
Gulf Shores has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the country. Here's how to have the best possible experience.
Beating the Crowds
- Arrive before 9am on summer weekends — parking fills fast and the beach gets crowded by 10am
- Gulf State Park beach access is well worth the small park fee — better maintained with more parking than the public accesses
- Weekdays are dramatically less crowded — if you can flex your schedule, Tuesday–Thursday mornings feel almost private
- The further west you drive along West Beach Blvd, the fewer people you'll find
Parking Smart
- Gulf State Park has the most parking and it's well-organized
- Street parking along West Beach Blvd fills quickly — have a backup plan
- Many vacation rentals and condos have their own beach access — check yours before driving to the main public areas
What to Bring
- Plenty of water: Dehydration sneaks up fast in summer heat
- Quality sunscreen, SPF 50+: The sand reflects UV rays and intensifies sun exposure
- A good beach tent or umbrella: Full shade makes a huge difference for families with babies or fair skin
- Sand toys and a boogie board: The gentle Gulf waves are perfect for kids
- Dry bag: Keep phones and valuables protected from water and sand
Gulf Swimming Safety
- Check the flag system daily: Green = safe, Yellow = caution, Red = high surf/strong current, Purple = dangerous marine life
- Never swim near fishing piers — hooks and lines are a hazard
- Rip currents do occur — if caught in one, swim parallel to shore until free, then swim back at an angle
- Supervise children closely; the Gulf looks calm but currents shift quickly
Jellyfish & Marine Life
- Sea lice (jellyfish larvae) are common in summer — if you feel stinging without seeing jellyfish, that may be the cause. Rinse with salt water (not fresh).
- Stingrays rest in the shallow surf. Do the stingray shuffle — slide your feet rather than stepping, so rays swim away
- Dolphins are frequently spotted near the shore — a magical experience!
